A Knife in the Dark part 15 (Kate)

If you have ever fallen through time, then caught by Rose's sister the moment before you fall into the void. Then you're Kate. When she got to the room that Annabella said Jon would be in, he was there. Just talking to some boy. The other boy was looking at a giant dead on the ground with a strange looking burn on its forehead. Jon's hand was closed around something.
“Jon?” Kate said as she took in the room. He turned around to look at her, and the other boy turned around first. He looked so sad to see her so he walked away, but Jon ran to her and gave her a big hug.
“Kate! You live!” He let go and looked at her with shock “I was so scared for you. I-I thought you were dead.” she made jazz hands at him.
“Well, here I am. Not dead and stuff. Wait, where's Eli?” Kate looked around for him, but she couldn't find him. Jon looked into his hand at a necklace. Kate's necklace.
“What happened to him, Jon?”
“He-he was killed by the giant. He asked me to give this back to you.” he handed her the necklace, and she felt like crying. The fact that he kept it was enough to make her tear up.
“Did he say anything other than to give this back?” Jon nodded.
“I'm not in the four, and he said something to Sean. But I don't know that part. Sean looked pretty upset though.” Kate looked at him, then over to the other boy who must have been named Sean. He stood at the other end of the room with a girl that looked like his twin. She patted he on the back like she was trying to be supportive, but she was failing. Sean swatted her hand away in anger.
“Go away Lucy!” Lucy backed away from him, as if to get out of range of an explosion. Kate walked over, and stood next to him.
“So, you're Sean?” he nodded.
“Um… what are you doing?”
“I was sent to protect Eli, but as you can see, I've failed.”
“Ah…” She didn't know how to respond to that without really hurting his feelings.
“And now I'm fading, so why don't we just call me Sean The Lame!” he flew up is arms to prove his point. The part about fading didn't make any sense, but he was about 12 or 13 and in a bad mood so she didn't expect him to. She looked at Lucy and took a shaky breath. Kate has Jon as a brother, but she can't even think about what it would be like to be Sean's twin. She looked back to Lucy.
“I am sorry Kate. I haven't been a good protector for Eli.” Kate looked at him in shock.
“I thought you were angry?” He shook his head.
“No, I just needed a little time to think.” Kate looked at him, and for a second he looked just like Eli. She put on her necklace. She thought about all the times Eli had saved her life, But when he had needed her, she wasn't there. A hand touched her shoulder, and she flinched. Kate hadn't noticed who it was until she turned around to see Jon's face looming over her.
“Sorry if I startled you, Kate. I didn't mean to scare you.” She took a beep breath. She looked at Jon a little closer. She saw that he had bags under his eyes, and a weary smile.
“Are you okay, Jon?” He nodded tiredly.
“I'm just worn out. It's harder to kill a giant with a curse on you then it looks.” he sighed, he seemed to be getting tireder be the second. She felt his forehead.
“You have a bad fever, Jon. You should sit down.” he didn't argue with her. She helped him to the ground. Lucy walked over to them.
“What happened? Is Jon going to be okay?”
“I'll be fine. I'm just tired.” Kate looked at Lucy.
“He's got a bad fever, can you go and get a cool compress please.” Lucy nodded.
“I'll be fine, Kate.”
“Last time you said that, I couldn't find you for a year. I don't want you to be lost too.” he tensed up. A look of pain on his face.
“Kate, it hurts. The heat is too much.” a cold wind past over them. Anna was back. She ran over to him.
“Kate, what happened?”
“All I know is that he has a bad fever, and he says that ‘the heat is too much.’”
“That's not good. Can you tell his inside temperature?” Kate shook her head. She doesn't have any power. Sean walked over and put his hand on Kate's shoulder, the way Eli used to.
“I can.” He put his hand on Jon's head. Sean flinched, and took his head
“he's going to burn from the inside out.”
